Yarn Along & announcing another giveaway!

Taking inspiration from Ginny over at Small Things, here's this week's Yarn Along update:

As we're almost halfway through April (does anyone else feel like time is just flying by?) I thought I should check in with the Year in Colour project -- and this month's colour is green. Perfect. This is the motivation I need to finally get Jack's second sock off the needles and on to his foot!

As for the book I'm reading: When Penguin Canada asked if I'd like to participate in a blog tour for Gillian Deacon's new book, There's Lead in Your Lipstick, I thought it'd be a great opportunity to educate myself -- and readers -- about how to reduce our chemical burden.

Even though I'm a low maintenance kinda girl and we use many natural and homemade body care products, I'm finding this book a fascinating read. Jam packed with loads of information, it helps readers identify what the dangerous ingredients are -- toxins such as phthalates, parabens, triclosan and lead -- and provides alternatives, both store-bought and DIY.

To learn more, check back next Monday, April 18th, for more information and the chance to win a fabulous giveaway!

The book sounds interesting, but also scary! At my age going natural is scary too!

Hahaha, Tracey -- I hear you! It's scary, but also empowering (knowledge is power, right?) because there *are* safer alternatives.

Just thought I'd let you know I just finished "The dirty life" and absolutely LOVED it! Read it in two days, just couldn't put it down..

Sounds like a great book! We're pretty committed to our natural products but when I'm reading labels I don't always know what I am looking for...This would be a good resource!

Poor Jack. To think of him walking around in only one sock all this time. ;o}

We use mostly natural products too. It's scary to think of all the chemicals that are in the product we smear all over our bodies every day - yikes! I'm interested to see what you'll be giving away. Make sure to check my blog next week for some giveaways too - yay for Earth Week :)

Those socks look wonderful & cozy. I only use natural products but I think that book looks very interesting & I hope I get a chance to read it one day.

@Anke -- it is a wonderful book, isn't it? I couldn't put it down either. Glad to hear you enjoyed it too...

@House full of jays - that's the neat thing about this book -- it deciphers what the labels actually say! There is so much greenwashing out there, you've got to have a PhD in chemistry to understand some of these labels! I'll write more about this soon...

@Mama Pea -- hahaha! Of course Ella is already asking when *her* socks will be ready. And poor Lucas is still waiting for his woolies, from last winter!

@Josee - thanks for visiting! It is scary to think about the our chemical burden -- especially in products that are meant to protect us, like sunscreen! MOre on that too...

@Genevieve -- thanks for your kind words! I've recently discovered the joy of homemade socks... so lovely to make and wear! Be sure to check back in next Monday for the giveaway!

I heard an interview with her on Canadian public radio and was really impressed.
So much that we as consumers need to educate ourselves about.
Warm wishes, Tonya

@Tonya -- thanks for your comment! Yes, there is so much to learn about... I find it overwhelming sometimes but I try to take it one step at a time. Books like this certainly help, as does doing as much as you can with ingredients you can pronounce!
