Knitting therapy

Yesterday I had a Bad Day. There was no catastrophic event or anything; just a series of small horrible ones... work bothers, family spats, a bad case of mummy guilt and a soupy mucky flooded mess in the barnyard brought on by two days of monsoon-like rain/slush/sleet.

The children were away at school and I was feeling a wee bit sorry for myself. So I threw a pity party. While some women turn to drink or chocolate, I stoked up the woodstove, brewed a big pot of strong tea, turned on some music and knit.

At least it was a productive pity party.

I simply love the sock! What kind of yarn is it? I'm attempting my second pair right now :)

Thanks, Tammy! The brand is 'Bernat Sox' - it's a superfine 60/40 acrylic/nylon blend. This is only my second pair, so I was reluctant to splurge on some really delicious sock wool, but now that I've got the hang of it, I've got my eye on a lovely superwash merino wool!
Good luck with your socks -- they're fun to knit, aren't they?

I just read about the massive 8.9 earthquake in Japan. I'm horrified, humbled and deeply sad. My Bad Day seems silly and inconsequential now. Another reminder to be grateful for all the good and wonder in your life, for you never know when it will be taken away from you...

I don't think you need make any apologies for your post or "pity party." I wouldn't call it a pity party at all, but rather you having the good sense to do what was needed to take care of yourself. Never forget we females are the nurturers, the caregivers and it's seldom anyone steps in to take care of us. So the smartest thing you could have done yesterday . . . you did! Loverly sock.

Thanks, Mama Pea. And you're so right. I knew that's what I needed to do yesterday, just create some time to knit, to calm my mind and focus on creating something with love for Jack, and I thought I did it without apology -- but by calling it a 'pity party' suggests that I was still a bit sorry about it. Thanks for the empowering reminder. Baby steps, right?

I agree - sometimes we need to sit down and nurture ourselves. it sounds like a very soothing gentle way to calm the grumpy mood - better than stomping around and snapping at everyone!
I loved to read your comment on my blog - what a small world! I do like the North East and have spent a few great holidays there. my elder son and his girlfriend went to Aberdeen for the weekend a month ago.
